Until 2011, Dr. John D. Caputo was the Thomas J. Watson Professor Emeritus of Religion and Humanities at Syracuse University. Caputo describes himself as “a hybrid philosopher/theologian intent on producing impure thoughts, thoughts which circulate between philosophy and theology.” Perhaps one of his most notable works is The Weakness of God (recipient of the 2007 AAR Book Award) in which he develops aspect of Jacques Derrida’s philosophy in a more explicitly theological direction. Dr. Caputo has also published a number of books about deconstruction and religion including What Would Jesus Deconstruct, The Prayers and Tears of Jacques Derrida and Deconstruction in a Nutshell. He edits the Fordham University Press Book Series Perspectives in Continental Philosophy and is an active member of the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy. Although he retired in 2011, Dr. Caputo has remained an active writer and public speaker.
